I may be stuck in the interior design trends of 2023 forever… and I am not at all mad about it!
Gone are the days of neutral non-committal color palettes, all white fabrics, beige and gray, and furniture that’s nice, but meh.
No more playing safe!
The world of farmhouse French country furniture and decor has taken a huge turn and now, we are going to see luxurious style, goopy details, detailed finishes, decadent fabrics AND even nature inspired.
Some years the trends are wonderful and we love to follow them. Other years… they are honestly terrible, and I just can’t bring them into my home or my shop.
But this year, the design trends are MORE than just fads.
I see a major shift in the interior design trends for 2023. I am calling it a “refreshed classic style” or “traditional refreshed.” This is the start of what we are going to be seeing for the next decade.
Here’s why I’m paying attention to the interior design trends for 2023…
Farmhouse style is becoming far more accessible.
If this is your style, lucky you! YOU are on trend this year.
You have an amazing opportunity to use the furniture, fabrics and details that you love to express yourself. The best part is you DON’T have to hunt for it!
This is important to me as well because it aligns with my personal style. More than that, it’s exactly what we want to create for our clients at my shop, Village Antiques.
I know I don’t want to miss out on creating a beautiful home for myself and my customers.
We can finally see ourselves represented in our homes. Even the smallest piece of décor, fabric, or furniture delights our souls.
So…let’s get into these interior design trends for 2023!
Like all years, there are some terrible ones. I’ll also include a bonus of the worst trend, that I just can’t help but to share!
Let’s start off with living room trends. Say goodbye to shabby style and skinny furniture.
Instead, you will see large and luxurious upholstery taking their place.
Oversized furniture with extra deep dimensions is showing up in a BIG WAY (pun intended).
In 2020 we were all spending time in our homes. Now it’s become a lifestyle where people actually enjoy staying in. Naturally, that means wanting their furniture to be comfortable AND beautiful as well.
It makes sense that these larger, more comfortable furniture dimensions have become one of the interior design trends for 2023.
We’re seeing this in chair arms, high backs, and (my favorite) skirts on sofas embellished with EVEN MORE traditional details.
As well, we are loading these sofas up with contrasting fabrics, patterns and details like tape trim and more.
I’ll be honest, I was a little unsure at the beginning when I discovered these trends.
I wondered if I could be the person with fringe on my skirted sofa, like, is that me? And guess what? After some soul searching, I am!
I’m excited to be bringing these bolder style choices into my shop and my home later this year.
The next interior design trends for 2023 are the major comeback of designer fabrics. You are going to see stunning, detailed and patterned fabric all throughout design.
Currently, if you go into any furniture store, sometimes even mine, you’ll see mostly neutrals. I’m talking linen colors, natural colors, whites, beige and grays – which of course is the safe route.
While these neutrals are what I typically use for my grounding pieces, you’ll see more florals taking their place. I’m talking about our beautiful side chairs, sofas, decorative pillows, and even in bedding.
I think this comes from us having spent so much time in our home office surrounded with our safe neutrals. Post pandemic, we’re all just ready to push ourselves to the next level of self-expression in our home designs.
It’s hard not to see these fabrics without them sparking excitement in our souls as we walk past.
I don’t necessarily see a specific color trend with these fabrics. As a matter of fact, I think that generally, color is making a bolder comeback over the next few years.
One trend that I DO see with fabrics is more nature inspired patterns and designs.
I love this because this is so quintessentially Farmhouse French country style. So, I’m excited these textiles are going to allow me to create that wonderment and beauty in our client’s projects.
Fabrics are not just changing in living room furniture, but also in bedroom design trends.
I will confess, I am a big fan of all white bedding. However, this pivot in designer fabrics has me open to possibilities beyond that. I love how much beauty we can create in an often forgotten room.
I’m seeing many levels of coziness all over the bedroom from the mattress, pillows, bedding, and even the frame.
The bedding will have cozy elements like down-filled, rich, textiles. While I do see traditional bedframe styles like headboards and footboards, upholstered versus not, I also see canopies coming back!
When I was a little girl, it was always my dream to have a canopy in my bedroom.
And guess what? I think this is the year!
I really love these shifts in bolder interior design trends for 2023. Earlier I hinted at this next trend a bit, and it’s color.
Color and pattern are going to be big in design year and for many years to come.
I just talked about the safety net of neutrals like linen, cream, and beige. However, once you’ve added some of that into your home, you eventually want to see more.
I think that’s why this year there’s a big emphasis on rich colors like deeper blues, greens, and grays.
I am especially leaning towards the darker shades of green. One of my next home design projects will actually feature this color palette in a big way. I am honestly so stunned at how beautiful and soothing it is.
It’s another perfect neutral just like gray, beige and white but with a pop.
Okay, so we’ve talked about a lot of huge shifts that we’re going to see in home designs. This last trend packs in the most punch, and that’s personalization.
Let me fill you in on a little secret.
The only reason why my chalk finish paint line came to be was because…
Clients repeatedly asked; “how can I get the look of your shop in my home?”. I heard this so many times, I finally decided this was a whisper from the universe.
Well, over the last few years, the same has happened at my shop again.
Only, this time clients ask:
With these questions, all I hear is “How can I make it more me?”
This is the personalization that will continue to come up this year.
You are going to see more unique color combinations, pattern mixing, texture combinations and more throughout home decorating.
You won’t see copy and pasted furniture and décor. People are craving unique, and special pieces.
Okay — I mentioned all the interior design trends for 2023 that I am loving. But… obviously not all of them are hits.
Allow me to introduce you to the worst of them all: mushrooms.
They’re everywhere, and I cannot for the life of me understand why.
Nothing about a mushroom feels luxurious or beautiful to me, nor is it appealing. It’s so oddly specific, and they come in various color schemes, size, finish, and textural materiality imaginable. Truly, when the design world clings onto a trend, it goes HARD.
I just can’t get behind this one. Can you imagine a mushroom just hanging out in your dining room next to all your natural materials?? Maybe you can if you like mid century modern furniture.
It’s possible I’m judging it too hard. Who knows? By the end of the year I may be topping my tree with an oversized bedazzled mushroom. For now the idea of it makes me cringe.
Let me know what YOU think of this one!
Apart from mushrooms, the interior design trends for 2023 feel like we have been transported back in time. Only, with a new space feel.
That’s why farmhouse style is, in my opinion, better this year than in years passed.
