I remember in our first years of marriage, I was disappointed with some silly expectation of my husband. I had a romantic notion in my mind of something I wanted him to do, so silly in fact I can’t even remember what it was!
Almost two decades later, what I do remember is what his mom told me at the time. She was praising her son, and said although he may not have been the most romantic young man, he had good virtues that I should instead focus on.
And I will never forget, she said “Bobby is a rough diamond”
As in a diamond in the rough
What does have to do with decorating?
Well, this fond memory often reminds me of what I love about antiques.
Their imperfections
Just like people, we adore antiques for their imperfections, not in spite of them.
If you’re new to the world of using antiques in your decor, my best advice to you is don’t walk away from a painting because it may have a hole in the canvas, or a crack in the wood, or knots, or a tear in the fabric, a chipped edge, missing moldings or more.
These imperfections are THE very reason antiques are so special.
This is what creates the beauty and charm in the piece and eventually your home.
Take a look at this very old piece I found for my home and what I decided to do.
Spoiler alert – it was broken
So what do you think, are you willing to use a piece in your decor even if it’s cracked, ripped or broken in some way?
