does your closet suck?

Does your closet suck?

I bet, as you’re walking around your home, certain areas are really starting to bug you.

For me, a while back, it was my master bedroom closet. I couldn’t stand looking at what felt like a huge mess.

Hubby’s side – don’t even get me started.

My side, I could never find anything! No matter how much we tidied up, it always looked like a huge mess!

The breaking point? Pre-social distancing, I had to go to an event with a color theme, and spent 2 hours looking for a red blouse that I knew I had somewhere in my closet!

After wasting so much time, I decided there had to be a better, more logical way to organize my closet, and after that event, that’s exactly what I figured out.

I know right now it might be easy to fill your day with small projects, I too need these small wins.

But if you’re staying at home, you’ve got the gift of time.

Though the days blur into one another and we’re all unsure of where the line between yesterday and today ended and began, this is the perfect time to create that designer closet you’ve always dreamed of.

So stop the boredom eating and Netflix binge-watching, and let’s do a really amazing project together!

I know it’s not always easy to feel motivated. My birthday was this past weekend and for the first time ever, my family and I ate the entire cake.

My hubby and I even binge-watched Love Is Blind. Totally not our normal, but neither is life right now.

By Sunday evening, I was “full” of these types of activities and ready to “do” and I’m sure you’re going to reach that point sometime soon as well dear friend.

So let’s tackle your closet. You can see how to here:

I know it can be daunting to open your closet, look at the disorganized mess that you’ve neglected, shut the doors, and tell yourself that you will save it for another day.

I’ve made it easy for you to start with a simple two-step process so you can do this project today.

Of course, you can add lots of steps and confusion but I’m keeping it simple, and focusing on just two simple steps for the hanging sections of your closet.

Step 1: Take all of your clothes and create little stacks on your floor of the types of clothing that you have.

For me, the categories I ended up with were:

  • sweaters
  • long sleeve blouses
  • short sleeves blouses
  • dresses
  • jeans and pants

My tip, keep to 5-7 categories at most.

Once you’ve done that, you’re ready for the next step.

Step 2: ROYGBIV it!

What? That’s what my mom said too.

This is the order that the colors show up on the rainbow, and this is the exact order that I use for hanging my clothes.

In order words, once I sorted my categories, I organized the order of my clothes to follow the order of the colors like you see in a rainbow.

Roygbiv stands for red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet.

Before I start with red, I actually work my way up to that color with shades like white, cream, pink, and mauve. It looks something like this:

It’s as simple as that!

The color order that I followed was this:

  1. White
  2. Cream
  3. Beige
  4. Nude
  5. Blush
  6. Pink
  7. Fuschia
  8. Magenta
  9. Red
  10. Red Orange
  11. Orange
  12. Yellow
  13. Green
  14. Blue
  15. Purple
  16. Indigo
  17. Gray
  18. Black

I did this in every hanging section of my closet.

By doing this, you might even be able to declutter a few items that you haven’t worn in a while, like I did.

Once you incorporate these two tips into your organization routine, your closet will never reach the level of clutter that it used to. I know my closet is always so much easier to manage when I get back into this routine.

I promise you can do this and it will be exactly what you need to get your creative juices flowing!

One day, soon enough, life will get back to normal. For now, just remember to take it one day at a time. Today, just tackle that closet!

Let me know in the comments below if you try out these tips for yourself, and make sure to share your before and after pictures with me! I would love to see your transformations.

If you can, please continue to stay home and take care of yourself.

With love,

Amitha
