How are you settling in?
For someone like my hubby, a few weeks at home alone sounds like paradise.
For me, a social person, typically hopping from task to task, and event to event, it was a bit of a struggle.
So what did I do?
Immediately, I scheduled a night out with my friends on a cyber date night via Zoom. It was BYO rose 😉 and so much fun. It was different but completely worth spending some time with loved ones.
So much so I scheduled another family dinner night with not just mom, but little brother, sister, aunt, uncle…you get the drift, more than our normal family gatherings.
And, as a last resort to keep myself sane, I even got my workouts back online with the Peloton App.
I’ll confess, even with filling my time with these online replacements for social gatherings, in-between cooking, home-schooling and working from home, I still have more time than usual!
One huge thing, a gift, this downtime has given me is the time to see which of my good habits I dropped over the years.
This old way of communicating is certainly going to come in handy to give you, and me a way to celebrate birthdays, graduations, baby showers and more while we are all at home.
Here is a great, feel good way you can keep in touch with loved ones over the next few weeks!
When I was young, pre-kids I did so much! And over the years, little by little good habits were shaved away.
I know some of you dear, devoted readers have been following my weekly blog for years, and by now you know one thing I love to do is write. I’m not the best, but I love sharing my heart and experiences with you dear friend.
Speaking of writing, I used to have a wonderful habit where I would get up early in the morning, and send out handwritten letters and cards every single day. I had notecards in my nightstand, on my desk, on my conference room table, in my big work bag, I loved doing this!
I was brimming with gratitude back then, and couldn’t wait to express it.
But with email, and then texting and then DM’ing it seemed less and less important.
On my last trip (pre-quarantine days), I was caught by this old bug when I stumbled into an old post office. It was a stunning, historical old French style building. The kind that awe-inspires.
Pre quarantine days
I just loved the charm of that old building, the old soul feeling, the old tiles, the cards, the smell of paper, the act of standing in line and putting the postage on your cards and on impulse picked up a handful of cards.
Later on that trip, in the early morning hours, while having my rich black morning coffee, I sat down and wrote and mailed seven different postcards. It was so joyful, it reminded me of this beautiful old habit and how I had fallen out of it.
So when this quarantine started, I was inspired to pick up some of my old good habits.
It’s hard to jump into anything with full throttle, so I suggest starting with a small project.
You can get some inspiration from a small project like this one.
The next time you’re at the grocery store, pick out some cards, and start writing!
Bonus, its completely social distancing compliant. You’ll probably be the only one in the stationary aisle 😉
With all of the birthdays coming and going over the next few months, what could be better than a beautiful, heartfelt message, riddle or even joke mailed to your loved ones?
I can’t think of anything better than that!
So who could you send a letter, greeting or postcard? Leave a comment and let me know!
I know this is a trying time, but as you probably know by now it’s a marathon, not a sprint.
So I encourage you to maybe remember a few of your favorite old habits. Things you used to do but fell out of habit. Making fudge once a year, or that delicious strawberry cake, painting, playing the piano, working out, cooking, gardening – I’m sure there is something on your mind that you can revive.
I am sure this will inspire you, and give you a few moments of joy.
I wish you health and wellness.
Take care of one another, we are in this together.
Love,
Amitha
