How to Update your Old Seasonal Fall Decor

Our dining table is a huge mess! It’s covered with all of my fall and holiday decor.

Last week’s chilly temps got us in the holiday mood!

I started pulling everything out and am going to dive into this project on Saturday.

It feels like Christmas day looking at all this sparkle and twinkle, pumpkins, garlands and fall decor!

Most of it, I LOVE.

However, there is always something in the bunch that just “looks so 2008” as my son Rohan (age 10) would say – I’m not quite sure how he remembers how things looked back then!

Something that looks extremely dated or something I’m just tired of looking at it.

Does that ever happen to you?

So what’s a gal to do?

You could just toss it out or donate it to a family member.

But that doesn’t feel like home.

Home is nostalgic and filled with memories, even memories of questionable choices!

So how do you keep including these old decor pieces?

Feeling a bit frustrated, I decided to take a spoonful of my own medicine.

I’m going to makeover a few of these objects to give them a new life.

Pumpkin Makeovers

I’ve had these for years. To you they might look great, but my whole family is tired of them.

I’ve had the same colors for years and I typically arrange them the same way. They are flat on the bottom, like the ones at Village Antiques so they are super easy to decorate with.

Often they are on my dining table and countertops, but not this year!

I love them but we’re ready for a change.

So watch to get one idea of how to get a new look:

This is a fun project you can do on your own and find a little bliss with a hands-on project or do with your kids if you’re looking for a fun weekend project.

Add More

Sometimes the trick to making something that looks not so great look great is to add more.

Huh? I know what you’re thinking…

Yes, sometimes what you are working with is too skimpy.

So we decided to add a few more decorative pumpkins into the mix.

Veronica over Village Antiques made these in hardly any time, and can even show you at  our upcoming workshop.

Just adding a little bit more and adding something a tiny bit different gave this whole collection an entirely new look!

Same thing happened with our porch. We had one little jack-o-lantern on the porch. It looked so unwelcoming I wanted to take the whole thing down or rather the one thing away.

However, I know how much my boys love the fall and Halloween so I decided to add more.

Last Sunday, it was such a beautiful bright sunny day. So myself, hubby and my boys went outside and carved out a few more and built out the group.

It was such a sweet memory and the first time I let them use the carving life themselves – I will admit it was very hard to let go but that’s a topic for another day, sniff sniff.

Change what’s around it

Many of us fall into the same rut of putting our decor in exactly the same spot and in the same way every single year!

I get it, it’s hard to flip the whole house, and all of the itty bitty fall and holiday decor.

So how about a quick-change? For example, you can add a little decorative runner under one of your groupings to give it a whole new look and to add some of that warmth into your home.

A few other ideas you can add a little bit of ribbon into your Decor or even pull out some of your green garlanding and add that into your decor.

Where should you start? With the thing that driving you the craziest!

So this week, we’re going to be painting pumpkins.

How about you? What fall decor item do you have that feels completely outdated to you?

Leave a comment and let us know!

Even better, add a photo into your comments.

We’d love to hear from you.
