My Unconventional Goal Setting System

It’s no secret that 2016 was a BIG year for Village Antiques, my signature paint line, and for me personally.

If we have known each other for a while now, you might remember that last year my 2016 goals included a major home renovation, building a new team, adding new retailers to our paint line, completing three new design projects and building a warehouse.

On the home renovation front alone, we were able to move in, set up all our furnishings, get gorgeous custom-made antique rugs placed throughout our home, hang our entire art collection, and style our bookshelves (which is a huge challenge on its own)!

So did I accomplish all my goals?

Well, no. But I got 90% there which is MAJOR.

Here’s The “Weird” Way I Hit My Goals With Ease And Grace…

I think only about the next 3 months in front of me.

Sounds strange?

Think about it…instead of focusing on the age-old question “where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?”, imagine where you want to be in the next 3 months.

Why?

Five years is too far ahead. There are so many things that can happen between today and five years from now. But when you focus on only the next three months, you create a greater sense of urgency to push toward your goals.

Now that you’ve imagined where you want to be in the next three months, here’s what to do next:

Write out all of the “to-do” tasks that you can realistically accomplish in 2 week increments during that 3-month period. This unconventional goal setting system helped keep me accountable, hit my targets and slow down.

Have you ever found yourself making way more goals than you could possibly accomplish?

I have!

And thanks to this process, I’ve learned that I could only focus on about 3 pressing things per day and 3-5 major goals during a two-week period.

So here’s your challenge:

Write down the top 3-4 things you would like to accomplish in the next 3 months (by this Spring).

Then, write down all of the to-do tasks you need to get you there and break them out over 2 week increments.

And voila…you have fewer – but more important – projects on your list. And a much higher chance of hitting your targets!

Know anyone else who could also use some help with goal setting?

Go ahead and share this blog (they will thank you!)…

In the meantime, keep making your home special with your design gifts!

With love,
