What I Do When I’m Creatively Stuck

Do you think it’s possible to actually lose your creativity?

I certainly do.

In fact, I know this is possible because it’s happened to me more times than I can remember.

Truth is, I get stuck in creative ruts from time to time (which is very bad for someone whose job it is to be creative).

I’ll be plugging along and then all of the sudden I’ll notice that I start churning out stuff that really isn’t all that different from the last stuff.

I’ll start selecting the same colors, reaching for the same fabrics or gravitating toward a certain piece or design that’s similar to what I’ve already done in the past.

For instance, check out these two pieces of artwork I bought – thinking they were “different.”

I took a step back and compared the two and I knew I was once again…. stuck!

When that happens, instead of getting frustrated and checking up on all the other trends, looking at what everyone else is doing, researching what’s in the magazines and what’s online on Pinterest, Facebook, Instagram and so on – I do something totally different.

I physically get up and go witness someone doing something wildly creative, something that takes talent, dedication, focus, energy, strength and more.

Why? Because if they can be creative and inspiring, so can I!

If they can be at the top of their game, so can I.

If they can create something new in their journey, so can I.

I get lost in their art and wow! It so moving and inspirational for me.

A few weeks back, hubby, knowing I love to experience creativity outside of my own field, got me tickets to see these two incredible young men who’ve taken their cello practice to unimaginable creativity.

I was absolutely spellbound and when it was over, my mind was soaring with creativity.

If you’re not a fan, true classical performances can be downright boring. But these guys took their art to such an amazing level, people were shouting and fangirling, dancing and screaming and – most importantly – connecting with and drawing from all of this creative energy!

As I write this blog, I’m still smiling from ear to ear remembering how creatively inspiring this experience was for me!

It charged me up.

It made me want to go home and do something great.

In fact, when I experience someone else’s creativity, it helps me with more than just my design work. It also helps me in my conversations with my boys and with my hubby when he’s facing work challenges and we have to think of new ways to solve problems.

So today, if you’re feeling creatively “stuck,” I urge you to forget about what’s online or what others in your profession are doing. Instead, get out there and experience things you are passionate about.

When you do, you’ll find that creativity will be brimming over and exploding in your mind and heart.

The key is to figure out what inspires YOU and then seek out those types of events.

Maybe it’s a night at the ballet. Or a chance to listen to a thought leader speak. It could even be a magic show or comedian. As long as there is creativity flowing, it can be a game changer.

I’d even challenge you to step outside your own comfort zone a little and experience something you never have before.

I promise, you will be recharged to take on your work and challenges with renewed energy and excitement.
